Abstract: Cancer of the cervix is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity among women worldwide. It is readily preventable with adequate and repetitive cytological screening with Papanicolaou (Pap) smears at the pre-invasive stage. The objective of this study was analyse the total number of pap smears examined in the year of 2015 at S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack and analyse them with respect to their age, presentation and microscopic findings as neoplastic and non neoplastic lesions of uterine cervix. The clinical data of the patients attending O&G department and their Pap smear cytology reports were collected for analysis. All the smears were reported as per the 2001
Bethesda system.Total number of pap smear examined in the year were 3032 out of which 206 were inadequate. Majority of patients belonged to the age group 31-50 years. Squamous cell carcinoma was most commonly encountered in 5th decade patients.Pap smear can be used as a screening test for detection of cancer cervix in the early and/or preinvasive stage.
