Abstract
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now account for more than 70% of global deaths, posing a major threat to health systems, socioeconomic stability, and sustainable development. This review synthesizes global epidemiological trends, risk factors, and policy implications to inform comprehensive NCD prevention and control strategies. Drawing on WHO and Global Burden of Disease data, it highlights rising prevalence driven by aging populations, urbanization, lifestyle changes, and environmental exposures. The review examines the epidemiology of major NCDs including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disorders emphasizing shared modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and air pollution. Advances in surveillance, big data, and digital epidemiology have strengthened monitoring but disparities in data quality persist, particularly in low-resource settings. Evidence shows that prevention through multisectoral policies tobacco taxes, nutrition regulations, urban health planning, and strengthened primary care is the most cost-effective strategy. Effective governance, equitable health systems, and community-based interventions are essential to reducing inequalities. Case studies from Finland, Thailand, and Rwanda demonstrate the impact of long-term, equity-focused approaches. Remaining challenges include weak implementation, industry interference, and socio-economic barriers. Future priorities require innovation, integrated health systems, and global cooperation to curb the escalating NCD burden.
