Abstract
Pregnancy and childbirth require appropriate maternal and child health services to prevent complications, especially in rural areas. Primigravida mothers are particularly vulnerable due to limited experience and inadequate health information. Structured teaching programmes can enhance knowledge and promote healthy practices.
To assess the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge and practice related to maternal and child health services among primigravida mothers in rural Bangalore.
A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used. Sixty primigravida mothers attending antenatal clinics in selected rural areas of Bangalore were recruited through convenient sampling. Knowledge and practice were assessed using a structured questionnaire before and seven days after administering the teaching programme. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests.
Most participants had inadequate knowledge at baseline. Post-test findings showed a significant improvement in knowledge and practice scores, with a highly significant difference between pre-test and post-test results (p < 0.001). Improved knowledge was associated with age, education, and gestational age.
Structured teaching programmes are effective in improving maternal and child health knowledge and practices among primigravida mothers in rural settings.
