Abstract

Cervical cancer remains a major public health challenge in India despite being largely preventable through screening. Pap smear is a reliable and cost-effective method for detecting premalignant and malignant cervical lesions, and periodic audits are important for monitoring screening performance. This retrospective audit evaluated Pap smear screening activity during 2025 at the Preventive Gynecologic Oncology Unit, Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer, Cuttack. Departmental records from January to December 2025 were reviewed, including Pap smear examinations, VIA/VILI screening, HPV testing, colposcopy, and cervical procedures. A total of 930 Pap smear examinations were performed, with monthly screening ranging from 49 to 115 examinations. Screening activity was highest in November and lowest in May, with a marked increase between June and November. Pap smear screening remained integrated with other cervical cancer screening modalities. Continued integration with HPV testing, colposcopy, and community awareness programmes may strengthen early detection and improve cervical cancer prevention services.
