Abstract

Optimal child nutrition is fundamental to physical growth, cognitive development, and long-term health. This review synthesizes global evidence on nutritional intervention strategies spanning the first 1,000 days through adolescence. It highlights how macronutrient adequacy, micronutrient supplementation, food fortification, breastfeeding promotion, dietary diversification, and school-based feeding programs contribute to improved anthropometric indicators and enhanced neurodevelopment. Early-life nutrition shapes brain structure, synaptic formation, and cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and learning, with deficiencies—particularly in iron, iodine, and essential fatty acids—causing lasting developmental impairments. Integrated, multi-component interventions outperform isolated approaches by addressing the broader socio-economic and environmental determinants of malnutrition. The review also explores long-term benefits of early nutritional adequacy, including reduced risks of obesity, anemia, and non-communicable diseases in adulthood, as well as intergenerational improvements in health. Despite proven effectiveness, implementation barriers such as resource constraints, cultural practices, and weak monitoring systems persist. Case studies from global initiatives demonstrate that combining nutrition with education, agriculture, and social protection promotes sustainability. Emerging innovations—including digital health tools, biofortified crops, and personalized nutrition—offer new opportunities. The review concludes that multi-sectoral, equity-driven strategies are essential for achieving holistic child development and breaking the cycle of malnutrition. .
