Abstract
Cervical cancer remains a major public health problem,
particularly in populations with limited access to
conventional screening services. HPV self-sampling has
emerged as a convenient and acceptable approach that can
improve participation by allowing women to collect
vaginal samples privately without a pelvic examination.
This review discusses the principles, clinical performance,
benefits, implementation strategies, available devices,
challenges, and future applications of HPV self-sampling
in cervical cancer screening. Evidence from meta-analyses
and clinical studies indicates that self-collected samples
tested with validated PCR-based HPV assays provide high
diagnostic accuracy for detecting cervical precancer, with
reported sensitivity of 90% for CIN2+ and 84% for
CIN3+. Self-sampling can improve accessibility,
particularly among underserved and under-screened
women, while reducing barriers related to privacy,
discomfort, and healthcare access. Successful
implementation requires validated assays, reliable
laboratory systems, appropriate follow-up of HPV-positive
women, and integration with existing screening services.
HPV self-sampling therefore offers an important
opportunity to expand screening coverage and accelerate
cervical cancer prevention.
